Motivation

I was honored to be selected as number 18 among the world’s top business thinkers on the Thinkers50 list. That was quite an honor to be recognized along such other professionals, like Seth Godin, Daniel Pink and Liz Wiseman. In the business world, it’s much like getting an Oscar– recognition for outstanding work and popularity.

I have known exactly who I wanted to be since I was a boy. When I built the LegoLand in my back yard and consequently shut it down at the request of Lego’s lawyers, it opened my eyes to the power of brands. I started my own advertising agency at the age of 12 and sold it when I was 17. Malcolm Gladwell has a quote that really speaks to me. “You need 10,000 hours to become a true professional.” Since I’m now the ripe age of… never mind. Suffice to say, I’m pretty sure I’ve exceeded that number by now. 😉

Hvad er din største marketingmæssige udfordring i 2016?

My biggest 2016 marketing challenge is to launch a revolution. My seventh book, called Small Data, is a direct attack on the overvaluation of BIG data. I want people to see the value in studying the person, not just the impersonal statistics, and discovering ways they can create new products and stores that will truly benefit the consumer. I can’t wait to see it on the bookshelves. It’s been an amazing book to write and I look forward to sharing it with the world.

Hvor finder du din faglige inspiration?

Inspiration comes to me from the people who live “ordinary” lives. They are the ones who truly reflect what life is all about. Whether it’s in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, the harsh reality of Siberia, or the warmth of a Brazilian favela, people all have the same basic instincts and desires. To feel like they matter, to feel accepted, to feel loved. That is what it is all about.

Hvad er dit bedste råd til dine kollegaer i branchen?

Follow your instinct and keep building. More importantly, be prepared to constantly look at how ordinary things can be combined in completely new ways. Being able to see how 2 seemingly disparate things can be melded into something new– that’s not just creativity. It’s the lifeblood of business innovation

My humble wish? That “Small Data” is the 2016 Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year.
